Modern Luxuria

An Edmonton couple expands their shop from a Ritchie area garage to an acreage home as they build a leather and waxed canvas future for their small daughters.

Minimalistic, strong and essential. These qualities are at the core of everything that was created inside the small garage of one Edmonton couple’s home for the past few years. A husband and wife duo, Isaac and Kristen Haines have always shared the shop and the tools used to pound out their leather and waxed canvas goods but operate two separate companies: Fieldwork Co. and Luna Goods.

Early this spring, the Haines’ decided to follow their dream of country living and moved to an acreage where they now have an in-home studio that takes up half of the house. “It’s definitely nicer than working in a garage,” admits Isaac Haines in a chat with Modern Luxuria Magazine.

The Fieldwork Co. website features leather belts, camera straps and journals or waxed canvas duffle bags, aprons and backpacks, among other items. Luna Goods specializes exclusively in hand-stitched vegetable tanned leather products. Luna Goods is slowing down operations during the summer months but continues to take custom orders. Kristen has decided to dedicate more of her time to mothering the couple’s two little girls. She can often be found with a piece to work on in her hands as the girls play nearby. An idyllic image but Haines laughs that  “it’s not always the perfect picture. Sometimes the girls come in crying. I mean it’s life with kids but for the most part, it’s really nice.” The husband and wife team see their handiwork as stitching into existence – not only their products – but a legacy they plan to leave behind for their children to continue building.
